Throughout history, people have been recycling waste materials in some way or another. The main reason that recycled materials were used, rather than new was that second hand material was cheaper to use. Today, we have other reasons for recycling our waste materials, such as preserving our planet, reducing waste materials being buried in the earth in landfill sites, and saving money by using second hand materials, rather than producing new materials.

The first real recycling started out in pre-industrial times when scraps from precious metals were recycled, and melted down for further use. Around this time, Britain was also recycling ash, and dust as the base materials used for brick making. In 1921, Britain also began a waste paper association, which was created to encourage the recycling of used paper. Another example of early recycling was that during the world wars when the governments encouraged citizens to recycle by donating their metals, and conserving fiber to do their part for the wartime effort.

Recycling And its Benefits

Recycling has two main benefits, which are reduction of both energy, and virgin materials needing to be collected, as well as reducing the amount of waste that is disposed of in landfills. Recycling also reduces the negative impact that waste has on the environment, and reduces the space needed to keep refuse sites functioning, it is estimated that in the UK, by the year 2010, almost all of the landfill sites will be full.

By recycling, we are not only helping our planet, we are decreasing the money spent on raw materials, and their production. Currently, the UK is recycling around 17% of their waste, which is a small amount considering that some neighboring countries are recycling up to half of their waste, that would ordinarily end up in a landfill site.

What Are The Recyclable Materials

For recycling to really work, households must be made aware of what is a recyclable. Many people are still throwing materials that could be recycled into their regular rubbish bins. Some of the materials that can be used for recycling are:

- Asbestos,

- Batteries,

- Building Materials,

- Cars,

- Clothing, and material,

- Compost matter,

- Computers,

- Electrical equipment,

- Furniture,

- Glass,

- Metals,

- Mobile phones,

- Paint, and oils,

- Paper,

- Plastic,

- Printer cartridges,

- Wood

Criticism Of Recycling

Recycling is a great thing, and has a positive impact on our long-term economy, living standards, and health of the planet we live in, although there are some factors surrounding recycling that are not ideal. All recycling uses energy of some type whether it is fuel for transportation of the materials, or the processing that takes place to reuse the materials. Additionally, many recycling plants use large amounts of water while preparing, or cleaning the materials they will reuse.

The only way to really benefit from recycling, and reducing the waste that is being produced is to use fewer materials where possible, and reuse materials in their current form.

Save the dying ocean and her resources

Entry for November 03, 2006- E2- Save the dying ocean and her resources magnify

It does not matter where on Earth you live, everyone is utterly dependent on the existence of that lovely, living saltwater soup. There’s plenty of water in the universe without life, but nowhere is there life without water. The living ocean drives planetary chemistry, governs climate and weather, and otherwise provides the cornerstone of the life-support system for all creatures on our planet, from deep-sea starfish to desert sagebrush. That’s why the ocean matters. If the sea is sick, we’ll feel it. If it dies, we die. Our future and the state of the oceans are one.

I started this story , after I came across this top story -Ocean Fish, Seafood Could Collapse By 2048 – Study -

    http://www.planetark.org/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/38799/story.htm

It is quite an absolute fact that so much of the surface of the planet is composed of water makes it habitable. Like the air and climate is seen or thought to be beyond human puny influence. The ocean is the most threatened part of the environment. It is perfectly true that human use the ocean as a dump. After first pouring down of rains, life begins to stir, it was from the ocean that plant and animals emerge to colonize the land surface planet, for everything is created from water. It is ocean that provide water vapor which drawn up by sustaining rain. Ocean water is our planet filtering system where all debris, both minerals and biological is dissolved, decomposed, and transformed into large septic tank from which clean water return to human, beast and plant through evaporation and precipitation .The ocean is the universal moderator of temperature – it is major provider of oxygen released for all species on land, air and sea consumed by breathing with long and gills.

As u can see, water cover 3/4 of our planet , 95 percent of whichis inthe ocean ,, of the remaining 5 percent lies frozen in the polar region ,and all the lakes , rivers, moisture in the air, soil and vegetation and underground amount to one percent of the total .Therefore water is life , beside the story creation narated that everything is created from water.

Without water qualities for absorbing heat, our planet will be Inabitable.the Ocean is the coolant of the tropic the provider of warm currents to cool regions. The ocean has been in more special way so beneficial to human -The ocean has been the firs that link human together through world wide currents of seaborne trade .the ocean the ocean provide human through fish a vast harvest of protein-100th million tons of fish harvest from the ocean cover four- fifth of the whole – unfortunately this vast harvest is not enough to cater for the protein we need , thus the large part of it go for help to offset deficiency which thirteen so many planet children.

Unfortunately, there is soberly on humanity of our world an unacceptable diversion of resources to feed pigs and chicken in some places. The ocean has been beyond man puny influence, whether wee see it as sacral cleaner or earth human shore or the cruel widow maker of a million shipwreck, hurricanes and typhoon , it remain the restlessly powerful serenely indifference to all the busy activities men seek to pursue in and under its buoyancy treacherous waves. In fact many are still under illusion or mediaeval concept of an endless ocean – seriously many think that once polluted river emptied into the open sea, once city sewer system is far away from land, all industrial and urban discharge will disappear somehow into blue space beyond horizon as if we pipe it away from our own planet. Many are in oblivion for a moment that the world is round and without edges.

The first and only refuge man has ever disposed of outside this planet is what was packed in the moon – this is also in the name of uncertainty about how the planet is linked to other planets. Every ounce of material dumped or channeled into the sea from the very morning of time until the modern age of industrialization has accumulated in one form or another inside the same land lock sea. – The lowest section of our biosphere with and the only one with no outlet for refuse. Standing on the beach gazing towards the horizon where blue sea runs into blue sky.

We refuse to digest the message from twenty century voyagers, who every year cross the ocean from continent to continent and the astronauts who see the whole planet from above , all giving their witness that the ocean has none of the infinite we give it in our dream. The ocean is deep and spread in al directions ,pollution from lakes and rivers of other world directly or indirectly , the sewer and fall out from the world countless cities and all farmlands and all the industry has ever running outlet runs into it dangerous toxic and lethal poison which breed bacteria that eat up our oxygen , ending killing the fishes. The ocean daily receive and never returns them. Instead of running into blue space they are completely interlocked and contribute to the rapidly accumulating pollution among them. In fact, the water most important to man is those most rapidly polluted especially the areas nearest the surface, the coastal and estuarine zone. The bulk of marine life depends on photosynthesis, is concentrated in an upper layer of ocean, in fact more than 90 percent of world fish catch is concentrated in water most vulnerable to human activities- water less than 200 meter deep and continental shelf which represent 10 percent of the ocean. Coastal water equally provide us with recreation besides feeding, the seaside suffer supreme bleak from dirt and toil.

Whatever are human may feel at the majesty and magnificence of his planet seascapes, he/she goes on treating the ocean as a sewer. Many still simply dump directly into the sea with no treatment. Industry contributes heavy metal, inorganic persistent minerals including radioactive waste. Also fertilizer and DDT from agricultural land are washed down to the ocean where following the current and concentration as the go up the marine food chain, the affect animal and increase bacteria growth. The coast also suffers from pollution caused by drilling and transport of oil.

The biggest problem we do know how much pollution is being poured to the ocean, at least in coastal areas we can see, smell a clear present danger, hotelier can estimate their loss as beach close in the wake of hepatitis, but get once get away from the shore from reasonably measurable and observable effect we enter a world of dark as the ocean. The problem we are facing is at a time when 2/3 of humanity has entered industrialization. Other risk is the disposal of ships and oil platform at the end of their life, mining waste, Also of intricate is land contamination through these same wastes, which has shocked the entire ground water path casing wet and brown disgusting land all over.

The military posed the biggest treat, they dump more poison at sea than any other establishment – the act war, the military game itself is pain, all the canisters poison full of mustard gas end up killing the fish, and some enter into our food chain. As nuclear power generation increases most nuclear notion are likely to dump into ocean containers loaded with radioactive. These canisters of poison us toxins disposed will certainly end up swirl across ocean floors, broken and leaking and what next, of course come after us through the food chain – on this a so called rhetoric is that what are we fighting for? The ominously growing national division of man planetary inheritance from tribal squabbles, racism, religious bigotry, which have wasted , ruined,, soaked in blood so such of his territorial patrimony- eventually we will all end it, this fact show that life itself has an end- but we reframe from catalyzing the time for such end. We are lucky to have God like God who dos not get angry and who I have known be the most patient.

Another issue of concern we know very little about process and transport by which ocean detoxifies evaporates or absorbs the massive waste which flow into them. In a nutshell, we must know THERE IS NO ESCAPE IN UNDERLYING UNITY AND INTERCONECTION OF HUMAN OCEANWORLD. Seas and ocean like airs above, mingle with each other, pass on each burdens, cleanse or poison each other, move in steady current and unpredictable tempest weave a seamless watery web. Their rain falls on the just and the unjust, their tide sweeps every human shore. Sovereign government may proclaim their sovereign national control over their own territories. But the airs bring in acid rain, the ocean roles in the toxic substance. Pollution move from continents to continents. So what does this tell us -? Ultimately at the edge of the sea the pretension of sovereignty cease and the fact of passing decade to assert its inescapable reality.

The bottom line is that is the reality of fact there is leverage points for area near the surface in which very soon can become concerted to having last destructive effect.

Is it not time for us to make swift correction on our erroneous conception of an endless ocean invulnerable to the combined refuse of human on earth to avoid risk of mishap in the future from frequent spill, fouled beaches, depletion of estuarine, more dead birds ,fish and marine mammal in the slick of oil and other pollutants.

My million dollar question is that what can we do about this , since there is sovereignty over the ocean .The Fraud in world trade organization, The fraud of colonialization built on lies , fraud of selfishness based on cooked doctrine of trade control , protectionism , hall been issue that are standing as barrier to international control which can only work through corporation and unity and of one world and one people. Because of this the little brother are skeptical that is this new concern on environment sincere? Is this a new fraud process to further create trade control and protectionism? The cost of getting of this is already declared enormous and need good skill. The little brothers who lack finance anyway also fear that is it another fraud to impose insurance cost for antipollution which the big brother have corrupted for a century without thought of the environment .Carrots and stick approach could works , if there is justice and equality behind it .beside interdependent of nations, can those nations generating nuclear waste give it up, why cant they , if all know it is bad the new philosophy is already born , the alternative technology are there , as the say when human know a problem then the road to solution will be clear-how do we change from the wrong path.

I drop my pen here — I register my apology for this long stuff—please post your response , your opinion , how we can get things to normalcy. Lov ya all

“… [M]an’s fingerprint is found everywhere in the oceans. Chemical contamination and litter can be observed from the poles to the tropics and from beaches to abyssal depths…But conditions in the marine environment vary widely. The open sea is still relatively clean…In contrast to the open ocean, the margins of the sea are affected by man almost everywhere, and encroachment on coastal areas continues worldwide…If unchecked, this trend will lead to global deterioration in the quality and productivity of the marine environment.”

The legendary Indian spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) once said: “The earth has enough for the needs of all but not the greed of a few.” His words have since proved to be quite prophetic!

The world today is in chaos and by that I’m not merely referring to the tumult taking place in the Middle East; what I’m talking about is the imminent extinction of hundreds of millions of people as a result of global warming. In both scenarios the United States plays a central role!

I have already pretty much detailed out how and why global warming is happening and which nations are most responsible for its acceleration, as well as who’s doing what and who is not to rectify the situation in my article entitled: Global Warming–How It Could Spark World War III.

That said, I’ve included a list of figures below to illustrate to what extent each nation/region is responsible for greenhouse gas pollution in the atmosphere (greenhouse gases are widely held to be the engine behind the accelerated global warming seen today):

USA: 30.3% Europe: 27.7% Russia: 13.7% South East Asia: 12.2% South/Central America: 3.8% Japan: 3.7% Middle East: 2.6% Africa: 2.5% Australia: 1.1%

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LIE

To many in marketing circles the concept of manipulation of social evidence is nothing new. Basically what it entails is manipulating tools of evidence to further one’s goals.

Thus for example, until fairly recently in internet marketing circles, the practice of manufacturing bogus testimonials was fairly widespread.

The objective being to convince visitors to one’s website to purchase products on the strength of those manufactured testimonials.

In the arena of global warming much the same has been happening. In the same manner that a defense counsel in a court case will produce its own expert witness to discredit that of the prosecution (or vice versa) so has the Bush II administration paraded a string of bogus experts to decry global warming as just a myth!

In 2007 a good number of environmental scientists and climatologists publicly stated that they’d been pressurized by various Bush II factions to manipulate data to downplay the seriousness of global warming!

Which simply begs the question: why is the Bush II administration going to such lengths to hide the truth about global warming?

SNATCH AND GRAB OPERATION GONE AWRY

It is now widely accepted that the invasion of Iraq had little to do with terrorism, less to do with democracy but everything to do with oil!

The question still remains however, why did the US go to such lengths (which included manufacturing evidence) to illegally invade a sovereign state under what at best can be described as a thinly disguised pretext for war?

Was it merely a question of the then single remaining superpower claiming its right to wield that might as it saw fit irrespective of international law, just as Nazi Germany once did?

Or was it a case of a few vain men hoping to claim their slice of immortality through a legacy festooned with the glory of having secured new oil reserves for a nation with a quenchless thirst for the stuff?

Or perhaps the U.S. oil reserves were so desperately low that Bush II and his New World Order buddies were prepared to force a snatch and grab operation that could easily have escalated into third world war, so as to shore up those dwindled oil reserves?

Or maybe, just maybe, the U.S. desperately needed to stockpile a vast amount of oil for something far, far more sinister.

To keep at bay a monster it helped so much to create!

THREADS WEAVING A DISTURBING TAPESTRY OF EVENTS

These days more often than not fact is stranger than fiction. When we look at the Bush II Administration’s policy on global warming it is beyond perplexing why they have gone to such lengths to deny its existence.

For sure, his Have-More buddies in oil and other environmental-damaging industries have plenty to gain by muddying the waters, but what if there’s really more to this repudiation of global warming than that!

What if this is a carefully concocted plot that has been kept under wraps for years?

Here’s what we know thus far about global warming. The data has been around for well over a decade and has been readily available to government officials.

Since the turn of the 21st century scientists across the globe have been warning of the extent of global warming; warnings that apparently fell on deaf ears! (Well at least as far as the Bush II administration was concerned.)

But supposing this was not actually the case.

What if the Bush II administration did listen, but only to those scientists who’d concluded that the world had reached the point of no return? And that global warming could not be reversed anytime in the foreseeable future and thus by proxy neither could its ensuing effects!

FUELING UP FOR A GLOBAL CATASTROPHE

In other words there was no point implementing measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions (thereby slowing down global warming) and that in fact the best policy was to forge powerfully ahead and ensure that America was readied for the ensuing catastrophe no matter the cost!

If it meant manufacturing a war, so be it! If it meant causing the deaths of hundreds of millions of people to achieve that aim, so be it! After all this wouldn’t be the first time in history that the few had been sacrificed for the many!

Oh! Except in this case it is the many sacrificing for the few, or more specifically, The Have-Mores!

When looked at from this perspective, that the U.S. is fuelling up for a long term global catastrophe, it all begins to make some sense! Especially considering that Saudi Arabia still has the greatest oil reserves in the world and has never said no to U.S. oil demands!

Bottom line, it is quite conceivable that the U.S. under Bush II has been insuring against (or at least trying to) a global catastrophe predominantly of its own making! But alas even the best laid plans go badly awry. Iraq didn’t turn out to be the pushover they’d expected and the oil is not gushing the way they had envisioned.

Think that such a scenario is way over the top? Think again! Remember Iraq? Remember Hurricane Katrina?

The way the Bush II government handled Katrina was so shameful that Google for some reason best known to it was compelled to replace post-Hurricane Katrina satellite imagery with pre-hurricane images on its map portal (Damage control? Trying to hide America’s shame from the rest of the world? At whose behest one wonders?).

As you can well imagine, when it came to light, the whole sordid affair was an extreme embarrassment to Google (And certainly not good for business! The search engine business thrives on the premise that results are accurate and impartial and not manipulated!).

But the point I wish to emphasize here is that if the Bush II government could shun its very own citizens (albeit mainly citizens of color) in such a cavalier fashion why would they give a damn if their actions resulted in the deaths of hundreds of millions of Africans or peoples from other parts of the globe who are going to be worst hit by global warming?

In World War II the Nazi’s genocide weapon-of-choice was hydrogen cyanide gas, what irony that in the upcoming global warming related genocide, gas too is the weapon of choice; carbon dioxide gas!

Plastics products are ubiquitous throughout the world. As dependency upon these light weight and durable products increased, so too has the need for global innovation in recycling technologies. Over the decades recycling companies developed a variety of processes to turn discarded plastics into hundreds of products from paint brushes to rugs and pillows, boat hulls and railroad ties.

Calling the Consumer

The greatest challenge to recycling manufacturers is educating and engaging the public. About 75 percent of Americans recycle newspaper and cardboard while little more than 25 percent recycle plastic. Industry analysts think this low response rate might be due to a lack of understanding about the coding on recyclable plastics – the small triangle with a number in the center – that identifies what kind of plastic an item is.

The most frequently recycled plastics of the seven groups of polymer plastics are PET 01,used in soft drink bottles and smaller jars; PE-HD 02, a harder and more durable plastic used in milks bottles and large trash bags; and PE-LD 04 that’s tough yet flexible and used in frozen food bags, flexible container lids and squeeze bottles.

Although the recycling rate of these and other products is not yet impressive, the numbers have been steadily rising since 1990. In 2006, about 2.2 billion pounds of PET plastic bottles were recycled and 928 million pounds of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) containers made it to recyclers.

Innovating PET Production

As awareness of the environmental damage done by polymers increased, so too did the urgency to encourage recycling. At the same time, experimentation with processing and application rose. For example, according to a CNN report, a Ph.D. in India, Dr. S. Madhu, included shredded and melted plastic in a roadway surfacing mix. Working for the Kerala Highway Research Institute, Madhu mixed the plastic with aggregate and bitumen to create a surface that withstands the pounding of annual monsoon seasons.

Working in a highly regulated environment, conventional recycling manufacturers focus on producing a long list of common products. Although processes vary, they generally follow a common methodology. First, plastics are sorted according to their PET identification number. This is often done before the recycled products reach the manufacturer. The “dirty” PET containers are also cleaned of labels, glue and other residual materials. A dirty regrind of the PET then goes to re-claimers who process the material into a form that can be used by manufacturers. Re-claimers further clean the materials of contaminants and materials that are lighter than the plastic. The final flakes of PET are washed with a special detergent that gets rid of glues, food or dirt.

Next, the PET materials are further treated with processes that separate the heavier PET particles from the lighter ones – this is called the float-sink stage. The plastics are then dried and ready to become new products in the hands of manufacturers throughout the world.

But, new methods are constantly being developed to recycle PET products, including a de-polymerization process that “reverses” the chemical process used to make the polymer. There are pilot projects using this method, as well as other innovative processes to make plastic recycling more environmentally friendly and economical.

Demand for Recycled Products

The importance of recycled PET and HDPE cannot be ignored. The latter, heavier PET is used to make building materials that become backyard decks that last longer than wood; it becomes lawn furniture, trash cans, office products, buckets, safety cones and much more. HDPE can also be used to manufacture above and below ground water storage tanks that withstand decades of use.

Of five major classes of PET plastics, the most high-end use is to manufacture new PET bottles and containers. Other classes include plastic sheeting or plastic that’s used for molding small items such as scoops for laundry detergent; strapping materials for packaging and transportation; resins that are used in molds for automobile components; and material that’s combined to make fibers for carpeting, fabrics and fiber fillings.

Recycled PET can show up in unexpected places such as business cards, sleeping bags, baseball caps and the welcome mat at your front door.

In the Hands of the Consumer

Ultimately, it’s all up to the consumer. Awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling plastic and the viability of manufacturing with recycled PET can mitigate environmental damage and support a global industry that returns economical and useful products to the marketplace.

In the U.S., many municipal governments have made it easier for consumers to recycle plastic. Cities accept all plastic products with the recycle symbol and do the sorting themselves before shipping off for further processing. The consumer doesn’t have to deal with separating PET numbers or peeling off labels. Many states have passed legislation commonly known as “bottle bills” that charge a small fee for plastic containers. There is greater value to the consumer to recycle when there is the incentive of a redemption value. Some communities have “drop off” recycling centers and others have “buy back” centers that pay consumers for recyclable materials.

Whatever the method of recycling or the process that recreates value from discarded PET products, it’s clear that the public, governments and industry share a financial and environmental stake in the practice of plastic recycling.

In most modern homes, lighting accounts for 10-15% of the electricity bill; an expense we might not often consider when shopping for light bulbs. All too frequently, the temptation is to opt for a cheaper light bulb rather than investing in an energy saving recommended light bulb – and investing really is an apt term in this situation. The cheap, traditional light bulbs are nothing but a quick fix; they will need replacing up to 12 times in the time an energy saving recommended light bulb will continue lighting your home. Once you are aware of this surprising piece of information, the price of the old fashioned light bulb in comparison to energy savers suddenly shoots up, and if you take into consideration the fact that for each traditional light bulb you replace with an energy saving recommended bulb you can reduce your bill by approximately £7 per year, the sensible option becomes clear.

Not only are the energy saving bulbs more efficient, they’re also hardier; although, like the traditional bulbs, energy efficient bulbs can break if handled carelessly, they are actually harder to break than their old-fashioned counterparts. This is due to the fact that they are often coated with plastic as a protective measure, and added to that their smaller diameter results in higher stress limits; consequently breakage rates are said to be less than 1%.

It’s not just your pockets that will benefit if you swap to energy saving recommended light bulb – the planet will also gain. Most of the UK’s energy comes from fossil fuels; this produces carbon dioxide emissions and contributes to climate change. By taking simple steps to reduce the energy we use, we will cut our carbon dioxide emissions and do our bit to help protect the environment.

So next time you’re shopping for new lighting, why not check for the energy saving recommended logo? You’ll be saving the environment whilst saving your pennies. The energy saving recommended logo was developed in order to help you spot the most energy efficient products; products that cost less to run simply because they use less energy to do the same job than more inefficient products. The light bulbs, for example, save energy (and money) because they are much more efficient at changing electricity into light.

You’ll be able to spot the energy saving recommended logo on a range of lighting products and fittings. You can also find the logo on household appliances, as well as heating, glazing and insulation products. It means the goods are amongst the most energy efficient you can buy as they have met strict criteria.

The problem with the true believer is that an issue becomes black and white. There is no room for discussion. The true believer is right and if you do not agree with him/her, you are dead wrong. The fact is the true believer is not satisfied just with the knowledge that they are right. They need you to acknowledge that they are right as well. They need to convert you. There can be no dissension. There can be no discourse. Facts do not really matter if they do not fit into the true believer’s argument.

In extreme and violent terms we have seen this behavior manifest itself throughout history. The Crusades and the misguided horrors of Nazi Germany in the Second World War are examples. Today the violent true believer mentality can be seen in the extreme elements of Islam. The true believer mentality also exists in less dramatic and more subtle ways throughout our society. It can be seen in ethnic, racial or gender discrimination. It can be seen in religious intolerance. Unfortunately, it was also be seen in the United Nations sponsored climate change event in Bali in December 2007.

The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) panel’s chairman, Rajendra Pachauri, said: Climate change imperils “the most precious treasures of our planet,” and the effects are “so severe and so sweeping that only urgent global action will do.

In fact, the United Nations reports that global warming is “unequivocal”. It estimates that as early as the year 2020 between 75 and 250 million people in Africa will suffer water shortages. It goes on to state that residents of Asia’s largest cities will be at great risk of river and coastal flooding. Europeans can expect extensive species loss. North Americans will experience longer and hotter heat waves and greater competition for water.

The world’s scientists have spoken clearly and with one voice,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “I expect the world’s policy makers to do the same.”

According to the United Nations true believers, global warming is “unequivocal” and the world scientists “have spoken clearly and with one voice”. There is no discussion. There is no dissent. All knowledgeable people now have been converted to this crusade. The reality, of course, is that global warming consensus is not the case in the scientific community.

Indeed for the Nobel winning United Nations panel (IPCC) and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore, fundamental problems with their global warming argument have already started to appear. As true believers in their global warming crusade, they will probably rationalize or ignore all facts that do not advance the cause. For the rest of us, as objective observers of the issue of global warming, the following facts should be carefully considered.

Global warming was supposed to cause frequent and violent hurricanes. The fact is that neither the intensity nor the frequency of hurricanes has increased. The 2007 season was the third quietest since 1966. In 2006 not a single hurricane made landfall in the U.S..

Since the mid 19th century, the mean global temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. This slight warming is not unusual, and lies well within the range of natural variation. Carbon dioxide continues to increase in the atmosphere, but the mean planetary temperature hasn’t increased significantly now for the last nine years.

In fact , 2007 provides anecdotal evidence that the Earth is, in effect, cooling. Antarctica is getting colder. Snow fell for the first time in Buenos Aires since 1918. Australia had the coldest June in its history this year. It snowed in South Africa for the first time in 15 years. South America experienced one of its coldest winters in the last three decades.

The truth is that the entire southern hemisphere experienced bitter cold weather in 2007. In addition, the Canadian government has just warned that this winter is likely to be its coldest in at least 15 years. Already, this winter has been very cold in many other parts of the Northern Hemisphere as well.

We have heard about global warming causing the rapidly melting Arctic Ice Cap in the last several years. In fact, advocates of man made global warming point to the rapidly melting Arctic ice as a sign that global warming is occurring even faster than expected.

However, the facts as reported by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California last month indicate a quite different conclusion. The melting of the Arctic sea ice in this study has nothing to do with global warming. It was a natural phenomenon caused by unusual winds and atmospheric pressure.

The project studied trends in Arctic Sea Ice using satellite data , computer models and buoy observations of sea ice drift. The conclusion of the study was as follows: “The rapid decline in winter perennial ice the past two years was caused by unusual winds. Unusual atmospheric conditions set up wind patterns that compressed the sea ice, loaded it into the Transpolar Drift Stream, and then sped its flow out of the Arctic. When that sea ice reached lower latitudes, it rapidly melted in the warmer waters. The winds causing this trend in ice reduction were set up by an unusual pattern of atmospheric pressure that began at the beginning of this century”.

Global warming proponents have pointed out that records showed that 1998 was the hottest year on record in the United States. Several of the years surrounding 1998 were very warm and near the record as well. It certainly appeared that the climate was warming due to these historical records. However, it has just been discovered that the records were erroneous. A Canadian blogger named Steve McIntyre audited the NASA records and found errors. When he reported his findings to NASA scientists, they conducted a review that showed he was correct.

This led NASA to recently revise the data published on its website. The errors change the historical facts concerning the global warming argument. The hottest year in the United States is no longer 1998, but 1934. 2001 is no longer in the Top Ten. Instead, four of the top ten hottest years are in the 1930s.

Global warming is an issue that needs to be looked at objectively. It is an issue for rational discourse concerning science and facts. However, it has become a crusade for environmental true believers. Despite the United Nations rhetoric, scientists do not speak with “one voice” and man-made global warming is not “unequivocal”.

The danger in blindly following the United Nations global warming crusaders is that we become far removed from the facts of the issue. Indeed, these same United Nations true believers could one day be wearing winter coats in tropical Bali asking Gaia, (the goddess of nature), for increased global warming. Such perversity happens when an issue becomes a crusade.

As the holiday season approaches, it is time to begin thinking about ordering the annual holiday greeting cards for friends, family, business associates and customers. Given the environmental concerns this year, sending holiday cards printed on recycled paper would seem to make good common sense.

When shopping for recycled holiday cards there are a variety of formats from which to choose, printed on different colored paper stocks. Many recycled cards are touted as “printed on 100% recycled paper.” Some even go as far as to state what percentage of that paper is actually of recycled post-consumer fibers. How is Recycled Paper Made? is a good reference on the paper making process, explaining the differences between pre and post consumer fibers as used in making recycled paper.

When recycled paper became popular years ago it was thought that it should look like it was recycled. Consumers expected to see bits of trash or flecks of foreign particles in the paper, feeling this was necessary in order to be certain the paper was actually recycled. That is no longer the case. Recycled paper can be just as bright white and clean as virgin pulp. Without the recycled symbol printed somewhere on the card it would be almost impossible to tell if the card stock it was printed on was actually recycled.

Here in lies the quandary. When championing the cause of environmental protectionism, does it appear you are doing your part to help if you choose to send nice white recycled greeting cards this holiday season? Even if the recycled symbol is on the back of the card, is that good enough to call attention to your participation in the go green cause?

Or, would you be better off sending cards printed on recycled brown Kraft card stock? Of course, cards printed on brown recycled paper can look just as nice, depending on the ink colors used, but it that necessary? Are consumers becoming more familiar with the recycled symbol and actually looking for it on printed materials?

It is interesting to note that there are not many recycled holiday cards available in the marketplace, even with the rush to go green. And, if offered, there are not many pleasing designs from which to choose. The exception would be a company called CardsDirect. On their website are over 100 card designs with everything from Christmas cards to Birthday cards. Many are clearly intended for those wanting to promote environmental awareness with designs that actually incorporate the recycled symbol and sentiments such as, “Season’s Greenings.”

Even more interesting is that several designs are offered printed on brown Kraft or white card stock for those unsure on which way to go. Which leads me back to my original question… should a recycled holiday card look recycled? As the holiday season approaches, I look forward to your thoughts on the matter.

As defined in wikipedia, webform “allows a user to enter data that is, typically, sent to a server for processing and to mimic the usage of paper forms.” By it’s very definition a web form can help to improve the environment.

How much paper can be made from a tree? Or, how many trees are required to make a certain amount of paper? It’s very difficult to answer these questions directly and the best that can be obtained are ballpark estimates. In the 1970s a report by the Conservatree estimated that a ton of newsprint paper saves 17 trees. This is a rough estimate. News paper isn’t made of the same tree materials that office paper is made of.

It’s difficult to make exact calculations on converting trees to paper as paper is made from a mix of trees. Some are hardwood, others are softwood. Some are young trees while others are old growth. Some are wide trees while others are skinny trees. Some paper is made from sawdust.

Whether or not we can calculate exactly how many trees can be saved by switching from paper forms to web forms isn’t an issue. No one can deny that the environmental impact of corporations and government switching from printed forms to online web forms would be significant.

Therefore, all corporations and government should be encouraged to use web forms wherever possible instead of paper forms. Imagine the savings that would result if every year hundreds of millions of government forms were converted to web forms. The environmental impact would be astronomic.

If all corporations joined the drive to move to a “paperless” society and stored all their information in electronic format as well as keeping all records in electronic format then hundreds of millions more sheets of paper would be conserved each year. Wherever possible corporations should issue each other web invoice forms instead of paper forms. All accounting records should be stored in electronic format. Services such as Createforms.com can help save the environment if used by government and businesses.

If humans had already colonized Jupiter, Neptune and Mars, it would certainly be all our fault. In fact, the United Nations Planetary Climate Change Council would be receiving the Nobel Peace Prize right about now. Their scientific statement would refer to Jupiter, Neptune and Mars as being in danger of man-made, irreversible, global climate change due to green house gas emissions.

It would be said that all scientists in every nation would be in agreement concerning a dubious future for each of these planets with humans as the cause. There would be no skeptics or doubters. Any dissenting opinion would be dismissed and ridiculed. Of course, there would still be time to save these planets from climate change holocaust, if humans would only change their behavior.

The problem for the proponents of man-made global warming is that planets, like Jupiter, Mars, and Neptune, do not have any known inhabitants. So, humans cannot be responsible for the global climate change occurring on each of these four planets today. Just think about that for a moment. Global warming and climate change occurring on planets in this solar system that cannot be connected to any man-made cause.

Of course, the warming of the Earth during the last century is absolutely man-made if you listen to many of the devoted disciples of global warming. However, isn’t it somewhat presumptuous to assume that humans have the power to control global climate change on Earth? Isn’t it is also presumptuous to assume that global climate change is not part of a long term planetary cycle and that even the sun does not play a major role? No, the true believers of man-made global warming are devoted to a cause. Their cause is to save the planet from a global warming holocaust in the next century brought on by the release of CO2 emissions caused by the reckless consumption of man.

While many planets in our solar system are warming without any human intervention, the Earth has been experiencing dramatic cooling. Last year, dramatic global cooling was measured by all four agencies that track the Earth’s temperature (the Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, the Christy group at the University of Alabama, and Remote Sensing Systems Inc in California). It is now estimated that the Earth cooled by about 0.7C in 2007 which is the fastest temperature change on record. In addition, the global cooling trend has continued into the first five months of 2008.

Of course, faced with the current cooling trend, past climate predictions of global warming for our immediate future are suddenly at risk. In fact, as global temperatures fall, the 0.3°C global average temperature rise which had been the prediction for the next decade by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will soon have to be revised and explained. Already, some scientists are coming up with a possible reason to keep the true believers faithful to the cause. It is a sort of global warming interrupted rationalization because many researchers now expect a “lull” for up to a decade while natural variations in climate apparently cancel out the increases caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

So, it now could be a much colder decade ahead even as the world continues to fight man- made global warming. Meanwhile, it will be increasingly difficult to explain to one billion starving people across the planet, that there is a global food shortage while nations grow corn to use as bio fuel to counter man-made global warming, even though the planet is in fact dramatically cooling.

However, a recent edition of Time Magazine has a recipe that may prove helpful to avoid world starvation while saving the environment at the same time. In another of their many stories on the environment and society, the magazine has a feature on eating insects. A video featured at Time.com actually shows people how to cook them.

Eating insects means the world would consume less meat. Eating less meat would result in less carbon emissions which would result in relief from man-made global warming. Time.com will show you how to cook beetles, grasshoppers, silkworms, and centipedes. Of course, eating the insects raw would use less energy and be even better for the environment.

If you want to listen to the proponents of man-made global warming, just forget the fact that other planets in the solar system are warming dramatically without any human inhabitants. Also, disregard the fact that the Earth is currently experiencing a dramatic cooling trend. So, fight to save the planet from global warming by ordering your new heavy winter coat and continue to advocate growing corn for use as bio fuel.

To the true believers of man made climate change, the next decade may be global warming interrupted but for the good of the planet people should be eating raw bugs anyway. The truth is that all of this man-made global warming hysteria continues to make very little common or economic sense to me.

How do you find the idea of helping the environment, helping other people and still earn from your effort? You can realize this by participating in the toner recycling Canada program. This is an environmental drive that will reward you for your kindness.

The toner recycling Canada program seeks to reduce and ultimately eliminate wasteful usage of toner cartridges. By recycling the toners, it can effectively solve the problem of dumping non-biodegradable plastics on landfills and waterways in Canada.

Toner cartridges are primarily composed of plastic. Toners have mechanical wheel necessary for its printing function. These empty cartridges will contain substances of ink that can become toxic overtime. The plastic on the other hand will last for millions of years. If you burn these plastics, it will contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer thus worsening global warming.

The toner recycling Canada program therefore is an excellent initiative to help the environment recover from the destructive effects of plastics. Another excellent thing about toner recycling Canada program is it can help in funding hospitals, building schools, and saving sick babies who need medical help.

So if you participate in a toner recycling Canada program, you will help not only the environment but also little and frail children who needs medical attention. The good thing is you get a monetary reward for your efforts in toner recycling Canada program. That’s because the toner recycling Canada program will pay for every empty cartridges you turn in.

So here are the ways how you can help and how you can earn from the toner recycling Canada program.

1.Spread the word about a toner recycling Canada program. Learn the requirements in participating in the toner recycling Canada program. In this way, you can do your own efforts and others can also join in this environmental drive.

2.Every empty toner cartridges you collect reduces the waste in the environment. So collect many empty toner cartridges to make an impact. You will surely be rewarded by the toner recycling Canada program for your hard work.

3.Of course do not expect that all empty cartridges you may collect can be paid by the toner recycling Canada program. Only good condition empty toner cartridges can be monetized. The toner recycling Canada program will test each cartridge and determine if it can still be recycled. Your earnings will depend on how many empty cartridges are accepted by the toner recycling Canada program.

4.If you have an online money transfer account, then your earnings will be sent there. So it is best to open a free account now to get your earnings from the toner recycling Canada program faster.

5.Lastly, what you earn can do many things. For example, you can use it as your seed money for further campaigns in collecting empty toner cartridges. It can also fund your own info drive to recruit more people for the toner recycling Canada program.

Participate in the toner recycling campaign in Canada and help clean the environment of plastics and toxic materials.
